Your Identity in Christ: Free!

Discover Your True Identity in Christ: Embracing Freedom and Forgiveness

We are continuing our thinking on the matter of idolatry and more specifically the solutions to our idolatry. In our last blog we thought briefly about the concept of forgiveness. When we realize that we are truly forgiven through the sacrifice of Christ that should encourage us to love him more, to worship him more, and to get our eyes focused on Jesus. Forgiven is one element of our identity in Christ. In Romans 6 we also find that our identity is free! Memorial day happened just a week or so ago and we all spent time reflecting on the human sacrifice that has been paid so that we might enjoy freedom in the US. This same kind of thinking equally applies to the believer in Christ. Paul says that though we were once in bondage to sin and under the wrath that sin rightly deserves those in Christ have been set free. Believers are free from penalty of sin, eternal separation from God forever in hell. Believers are also free from the controlling power of sin in their daily lives! We have the choice to sin and the choice to be godly. Admittedly, this is a long process of learning to love Jesus more than we love anything else, but what Christ has done is given us the ability to do that. Freedom! What a glorious reminder. The text, especially in vv. 14-23, emphasize something else - we are free to live for Christ. Several times in these short verses we find the concept of "presenting oneself." We are not to willingly present ourselves to sin, but to righteousness instead. Sin is a cruel taskmaster - the wages of it are death. But the gift of God is eternal life! It is freedom from the power and penalty of sin. Friends, when you repented of your sin and trusted in the finished work of Jesus on the cross you were freed FROM the Power and Penalty of Sin and you were freed TO present yourself to Christ.Idolatry does not have to reign in your life...Jesus can. You identity is that you not only were saved from something but to it. Praise Jesus. Your idenity in Christ: Free!
